The invisible threat to your home

Radon in Illinois?

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that forms when uranium, thorium, or radium break down in rocks, soil and groundwater. Radon is invisible, odorless, and tasteless — making it impossible to detect without specialized equipment! People can be exposed to radon primarily from breathing radon in air that comes through cracks and gaps in buildings and homes, with highest concentrations in basements and/or first floors. Any home may have a radon problem. This means new and old homes, well-sealed and drafty homes, and homes with or without basements. Radon testing is recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency, the Surgeon General, the American Lung Association, and the Illinois Department of Health.

If Radon exists nearly everywhere

Why Get Tested For Radon?

Reason #1: HEALTH
The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that 1 in 15 homes has elevated radon levels and results in 21,000 radon related lung cancer deaths. Radon gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer, behind smoking. Although lung cancer can be treated, the survival rate is one of the lowest for those with cancer. From the time of diagnosis, only 11-15 % of those afflicted will live beyond five years, depending upon demographic factors. This can be prevented by knowing your home’s radon levels and mitigating the home if levels are above 4.0 pCi/L.

Reason #2: MONEY
Real Estate Transactions: if you are in the process of buying a home, get the radon levels tested to see if mitigation is needed. If the Radon levels are elevated above 4.0 pCi/L, you can ask the seller to install a radon mitigation system or reimburse you the cost for future mitigation work. Most homes can be fixed for about the same cost as other common home repairs, averaging $1500-$1800. The most commonly used and most effective radon mitigation systems use a fan to pull in radon from beneath the house, and vent it outdoors where it is quickly diluted to safe levels. Save yourself money and have peace of mind by getting a professional radon test.
